Franklin Goose released this promo last week and it's a FANTASTIC deal! Visit the Franklin Goose website and write legitimate reviews on products they carry. For each review you write you will earn a $5 store credit and there is NO limit! Obviously, the reviews are supposed to be of products you own, have used, or have experience with. Franklin Goose is an online store that offers organic, natural, and eco friendly baby/child products. I have been working on my reviews for awhile now and am honestly a little embarrassed by the number of products that we own or have experience with! This is a great way for the company to get their name out there and to promote their site. The Franklin Goose blog stated that they would rather offer credits to potential customer rather than to pay for advertising. If you ask me this was a genius idea! There are now tons of people who know their name and can probably name a number of items they carry! Here's what you have to do -
1. Visit the Franklin Goose site
2. Register for an account (you will see the option in the upper right hand corner of the screen)

4. When you see an item you can write a legitimate review on click the 'Add Your Thoughts' link

They stated that they are 3-4 days behind at this point. Once your review has been approved you will see the credit show up in your account. Once your credit posts you will see a box in your account details that will say "Store Credit". Please be patient, like I said it will take a few days for your credits to show. The other day, a bag of 3 GIGANTIC phone books was dropped on my front step. I was beyond annoyed; I know it is a business and they MUST be making money on these phone books, but I can't remember the last time I even used a phone book and on top of that, where in the world would I store these 4-5" thick books?? They immediately were dropped in the recycle bin.

If you haven't used your Gymbucks at Gymboree yet, this is the last day to redeem them! It's like getting 50% off on all merchandise- even sale and clearance- can't beat that. There are some REALLY cute Valentine's Day items if you are in the mood for a splurge- I picked up the above shirt for E, $16.75 before Gymbuck savings. It was just too cute to resist! Lots of sales items have been picked over in store, but be sure to ask the employees if they have anything in back in the size and season you are looking for- they are usually very happy to look for you. 100% Natural and Organic Oatmeal Bath

I first posted this 'recipe' for homemade organic oatmeal bath back in June. I figure that since it's now winter I would re-post it. This oatmeal bath will really help to soothe that dry and scaly winter skin.

Oatmeal baths are often recommended to soothe symptoms of: eczema, chicken pox, poison ivy/sumac/oak, dry skin, sunburn, windburn, insect bites, and a number of other ailments. However, a store bought oatmeal bath product can be costly. Many of the store bought versions also contain chemicals which can irritate the skin. My son experienced a food intolerance this year which resulted in a full body rash. I thought that an oatmeal bath would help to soothe his skin but didn’t want to spend a lot on something that may not work. I did a little research and found that it was easy to make my own oatmeal bath with the oatmeal I had right in my pantry!

A popular name brand version is 12 ounces and will cost on average $6. This homemade version will make about 18 ounces and will cost about $3. You do the math! This version is all natural and organic, and simple to make.

All you will need is a blender, food processor or coffee grinder and about 1/3 cup of organic oatmeal. Instant oatmeal (unflavored), quick oats, or slow cooking oats will all produce the same results. If you are bathing a baby or small child, you will only need about 1/3 cup of the oats per bath. I like to grind up a couple of cups of oats and store in a sealed container in the bathroom so I always have some ready for the bath.

Blend, process, or grind the oats until you have a very fine powder. To check if the oats have been ground enough stir 1 tablespoon oats into a glass of warm water. If the oats give the water a milky look and a silky feel, you've blended long enough. Honestly, I always skip this step and just assume that the oats are ready when they are a fine powder and can’t be ground much more.

Sprinkle the oats into a tub of running water. Give the oats a few minutes to 'dissolve' before putting your child in the tub. Take caution because the oats will make the tub very slippery. Soak your child in the tub for 15-20 minutes.

That’s it! Homemade all natural and organic oatmeal bath.

Whether you are packing a lunch for yourself or your kiddos, you're undoubtedly searching for little containers to stash all of the individual items or are grabbing a ziplock type of bag. Plastic baggies sure are convenient, but are not very reusable and end up in the landfill entirely too quickly. I was shopping at Whole Foods last night and noticed that all of the Method Squeaky Green Laundry Detergent is 50% off! That made it $4.97/32 load bottle (that's just 15 cents a load!). Method is my favorite 'greener' laundry detergent. I think it cleans really well and leaves clothes much softer than other detergents I have used (Seventh Generation is one that I liked, but felt our clothes were 'crunchy' after using, I'm also a fan of the Kirkland/Costco Enviromentally Friendly detergent and fabric softeners). My absolute favorite Method detergent is the Rice Milk & Mallow scent MethodBaby Squeaky Green Laundry detergent. This scent smells sooooo delicious! And even the scented versions are extra gentle and does not bother E's sensitive, sometimes excema-ridden skin.

Gotta love good grains

When Ethan was an infant I decided I was going to change the way we ate at our house, in hopes that he would grow up thinking brown rice was the norm and whole grain bread with flax seeds was yummy.

Why whole grains? If you are unfamiliar with the health benefits, here are just a few courtesy of the Whole Grains Council:

Other benefits indicated by recent studies include:

reduced risk of asthma
healthier carotid arteries
reduction of inflammatory disease risk

less gum disease and tooth loss

So, I cleaned my pantry out of refined flours, sugars, white rice, and the like. I replaced my white rice with brown rice and quinoa. The white flour is now whole wheat pastry flour (it has a finer texture than regular whole wheat flour and substitutes more easily in recipes), the pasta is now organic whole wheat pasta (from Costco at a great price), and the sugar now unrefined organic sugar (also found at Costco) or agave syrup or sometimes honey. I added in a variety of lentils and beans for making winter soups and side dishes. I also stocked up on wheat bran and ground flax seed to add into recipes like pancakes, quick breads, and muffins (I just reduce the flour a bit and replace with the wheat bran, and add a little flax in as a bonus). And you what? The food tastes great! Brown rice has such a nutty flavor and bite to it, it is more filling and tasty than its refined counterpart. I find that the whole grains, whole wheat and natural sugars are actually more flavorful and "real" tasting than what I had been using all those years.

Now, don't go thinking that we're munching on carrots and quinoa 24-7 here. We love our sweets and treats here too! BUT... My thinking is that even if I am making cookies or a cake or my homemade pizza, I know it is at least a little bit healthier than the original version since I'm using whole grains and more natural, unrefined ingredients. The revised pantry is now my norm and I just make my old recipes work with these ingredients (much to my mom's dismay - she begged me to buy some white flour for her to bake with on Thanksgiving!!).

I realize I have only touched the surface of the options for whole grains though. I just read this article on NPR that nicely outlines some additional whole grain options that you may not be familiar with and also offers some fairly easy recipes that incorporate these tasty grains.

In the course of this transition, I have fell in love with the bulk foods area of the market. Whether it be at Sunflower Farmers Market, Sprouts Farmers Market, or Whole Foods, I buy everything possible in bulk section: flour, sugar, lentils, beans, quinoa, rice, nuts, honey.... Bulk is awesome because YOU get to choose how much you want to buy. Need 1/2 cup of french green lentils for a recipe? You can buy exactly what you need with no excess left to sit in your pantry for years. Plus, there is very little packaging to be tossed! I purchased some clear reusable containers from Costco to store my bulk items in my pantry and labeled them, so everything is easy to find and organized. An added bonus to the bulk section is that the organic varieties are VERY affordable (I find that Whole Foods has the best selection for organic bulk items) - often cheaper than buying a packaged conventional version on the shelf.

Some of the inspiration for this change came from reading Dr. Sears' books on nutrition. I would highly recommend The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood; but don't let the title fool you- the information works for the whole family. This book is brief but full of great information. If you are looking for a more thorough book, The Family Nutrition Book is a great resource. I have both books and must say there is quite a bit of overlap between the two books. I actually prefer the way The Healthiest... is written and organized over The Family Nutrition Book, as it is more a quick reference guide. Organic Valley Coupons

I'm sure many of your know that feeding your family organic products can be costly. Finding a sale on organic items can be rare and tracking down coupons has been next to impossible for me. BUT, was I really looking hard enough? I have decided that I need to start seriously couponing for our organic groceries. I'm just not willing to cut out the organic so I need to find a way to fit it into our budget. In our household we try to focus on buying organic when it comes to dairy, produce, and eggs (I also prefer organic meat but only my little T eats organic meat as of now since it is too costly for the whole family). Anyway, I have decided that I will pass along any organic coupons I locate to our readers.

The site states that the coupons only refresh about once a year (in March) so print these wisely. We love the Organic Valley cheese in our house. An easy way to reuse your holiday cards is to cut them up (as you see fit) and use them next year for To/From tags for your presents. This is especially useful for those super embellished and glittered cards that are not recyclable. It'll be on my to-do list this week, I'll post pics of my creations after I'm done. It's so easy and you won't find yourself having to run to the store last minute for To/From tags next year!

Recycle bank is a pretty cool program where you can get rewarded for your recycling efforts; either curbside or by recycling electronics and other items in your community.

With curbside recycling your cart will be weighed each week and you will earn points based on how much you recycle. The more you recycle the more you will earn! Bummer that this program is only available in a few select states (Colorado, Conneticut, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Virginia). I would love to see this program offered in my community!

You can recycle your old electronics by sending them to Gazelle or Flipswap. Just mail your old electronics and collect points! You can also recycle items in your communities (just check the Recycle Bank for more details).

Redeem the points you earn for rewards! If you sign up for a Recycle Bank account (anyone can sign up) you will earn 100 points just for doing so! You can redeem these points for rewards such as FREE Happy Baby Food (50 points), $1 off coke products coupon (10 points), and various other rewards including lots of grocery coupons.

I do lots of my shopping online because that's where I seem to always find the best deals. I hate paying full retail price for anything! I can almost always make a good deal even sweeter when shopping through an online rewards/rebate sites. There is no cost for joining these sites and most of them offer an incentive just for joining. So, if you find a good sale, use a coupon code, and shop through a rebate site you have just scored yourself a super sweet deal! Here are the rebate/reward sites I frequent most often:

Ebates - you can earn cash back via a personal check or have it deposited into your paypal account. You will earn a certain percentage back on your total purchase.

Here's how to use ebates -

1. Visit the ebates site before you begin your online shopping

2. Login to your account (or open a new one)

3. Search for the store you are looking to shop at

4. Click on the store's link (via ebates), the percentage you will earn is listed on the store link

5. Make a purchase in that same click session

Your cash back earnings will be deposited into your ebates account. Four times a year you will receive a payment from ebates. That's it, super simple! I earned back over $50 just from my online holiday shopping! You must be logged into your account in order to receive credit for shopping through the ebates link! There is no minimum balance required in order to receive a payment. (earn a $5 sign up bonus)

Cashbaq - you will earn cash back via a personal check or deposited into paypal account. Which ever you choose. You will earn a $5 bonus just for registering!

How to use cashbaq -

1. Visit the cashbaq site before you begin your online shopping

My Points - through My Points you earn points that can be redeemed for various gift cards on the My Points site. You can earn points through shopping via the My Points site links, reading emails, taking surveys, playing games and searching the web. You must be logged into your account when on the My Points site in order to earn points. I have earned all my points through reading emails and completing surveys.

Mr. Rebates - basically the same directions as the other cash back rebate sites.

Here's how to use Mr. Rebates -

1. Visit the Mr. Rebates site before you begin your online shopping

2. Login to your account (or open a new one)

3. Search for the store you are looking to shop at

4. Click on the store's link (via Mr. Rebates), the percentage you will earn is listed on the store link

5. Make a purchase in that same click session

Your Mr. Rebates cash back can be cashed in my requesting a personal check or a payment via paypal. You must have a minimum amount of $10 available in order to request a payment from Mr. Rebates.

Bing

1. Log into your Bing account

2. Search for cash back deals you are looking for using Bing

3. Click the link for the best deal and go to that store

4. Make your purchase in the same click session

Your Bing rebate will be credited to your account once Bing receives confirmation of a completed order. You can request your cash back about 60 days after your online purchase and with at least $5 in your account.

Sunshine Rewards - you earn credits for online shopping, taking surveys, participating in site offers/contests, and paid clicks. You can redeem your credits for gift cards, paypal payments, sunshine auctions, or donations. Remember, you must be logged into your Sunshine Rewards account in order to collect credits.

Swagbucks - you earn Swagbucks for searching the web and shopping online through the swagbucks site. Swagbucks can be redeemed for various prizes such as gift cards. Make sure you do your online searches through the swagbucks search bar or by downloading the swagbucks toolbar. Visit the swagbucks site for other ways to earn. I have earned the majority of my swagbucks through online searches and by finding swag codes hidden on their site.

The top sites which I frequent are - ebates, upromise, my points, and swagbucks. I have earned the most on these sites. When I am doing my online shopping I generally check all the sites to see which site will offer the highest return. I usually find that I have the option of choosing between a couple different sites which offer rebates for the same store. Get started now by signing up through the links listed above and begin earning for purchases you are already making!

Piggy Paint review and coupon code

Piggy Paint nail polish is as "natural as mud". It is kid friendly, mom friendly, and earth friendly. It is the only nail polish I have found that is:

non-toxic
low odor
water based formula
hypoallergenic
free of formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, bisphenol A, ethyl acetate and acetone

Piggy Paint sent me a sample of their nail polish and remover to try out. I love all the vibrant colors available and they have some great gift pack combos available too. I have to say that I was very impressed with this nail polish. I was worried that this polish would require more than the typical two coats to get a good color. I was wrong! Only two coats were necessary and I probably could have even gotten away with one! I love that there was very little odor, it went on smooth, and dried very quickly. The directions recommend using a blow dryer to help set the polish for maximum chip resistance. That initially worried me because I thought this polish would take forever to dry. Again, I was mistaken. It didn't take any longer than typical polishes. The shine in the polish was so nice that I didn't feel like I needed to add a top coat. The only change I would make is a bigger bottle. I felt like I needed more room to grasp the top while painting my toes. However, I guess these are a great size for little girls. maybe a mama sized version would be a great addition.

Piggy Paint nail polish remover is a great companion to the piggy paint family. The polish remover is also:

Piggy Paint sent me a bottle of polish remover to try out also. My first attempt at removing polish didn't go well. However, I was trying to remove my drug store brand, full of chemicals, nail polish. I was impressed that like the polish, there was next to no odor. I even smelled it a couple times thinking I was missing something. When I used the piggy paint polish remover to take off the piggy paint polish is worked without any problems and took the polish off with little effort. So, I would pass on this remover for taking off regular nail polish but it is fabulous for removing piggy paint. Ironically, I spilled some extra strength name brand nail polish remover on my wood coffee table before I began this review and within seconds it had taken the finish off my table even though I cleaned it up immediately. I figured that since the table was already damaged I would try some piggy paint remover on the table. There was absolutely NO damage! All in all, I was very impressed with Piggy Paint products and will definitely be using this healthier and environmentally friendly brand as my regular nail polish and remover from now on. I really love their gift pack combos like: little miss firecracker, lovebug hug, and mistletoe (which is on sale right now). Since I don't wear a ton of polish, and since I have a son, I'll keep my fingers crossed that there will be a little girl in my future so I will have an excuse to stock up on this awesome polish!

Ecostore USA sent me a bottle of Auto Dish Powder and Pure Oxygen Whitener to try out. I was initially skeptical of both products. I have tried a number of environmentally friendly dish washing soaps but have not been satisfied with any of them. I found that most of the detergents left a cloudy and chalky film on my dishes. After just a few washes I was very impressed with the Ecostore USA Auto Dish Powder. One tablespoon of the powder left my dishes clean and without the milky and chalky film. I wanted to give the Auto Dish Powder a true test so after a pasta dinner with marinara sauce the dishes went right in the dishwasher with no pre-rinse. We don't run our dishwasher unless it is full, usually a pretty heavy load, so the marinara sauce had 2 days to sit and dry on the dishes. This dish powder was up for the challenge! I was shocked to see seriously clean dishes with no marinara residue! I was definitely impressed with the results of this dish powder.

My husband has a slight obsession with bleach, which drives me nuts! Anything we own that is white and can be bleached is so regularly. It drives me crazy but after years of trying I have not been able to break him of his habit. Until now! The Pure Oxygen Whitener does exactly what one would assume based on the name of the product. I put this product to the test with a load of dingy white socks. I used one tablespoon of the Pure Oxygen Whitener along with our normal detergent and let the whites sit and soak for a brief while during the cycle. Another crib recall....The Consumer Product Safety Commision has instructed consumers to stop using 2.1 million Stork Craft drop side cribs. There have been a number of cases in which the drop down sides became detached which resulted in injury and death. In the past two years nearly 5 million drop down side cribs have been recalled and the CPSC is discussing banning drop down side cribs all together. According to The Consumer Reports Safety Blog ...

The Stork Craft cribs were manufactured between January 1993 and October 2009. The recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that were manufactured between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. and Canada in 1998. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm’s name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm’s insignia “storkcraft baby” or “storkling” is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs with the “Fisher-Price” logo, the logo can be found on the crib’s teething rail, in the manufacturer’s instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of some models.

The cribs were sold at major retailers in the U.S. and Canada including BJ’s Wholesale Club, J.C. Why it's important to keep your child rear facing...

I stumbled upon Joel's Journey when perusing Mama Dweebs blog. Joel's Journey provides some great information on why remaining rear facing in a car seat is safer. Joel was 18 months old and 33 pounds at the time of the front impact car accident that injured him. At 18 months and 33 pounds Joel was sitting forward facing in his car seat as he was well over the 12 month AND 20 pound minimum requirement. Joel broke his neck in the accident. For a great, although incredibly scary visual, watch the video link created by Joel's grandfather. The video will demonstrate the difference in impact that a forward facing child will experience vs. a rear facing child. Take some time to read through all the links on Joel's Journey, they are incredibly educational. The AAP now recommends that children should be rear facing in their car seats until at least two years of age.

Visit your public library!

Have you paid a visit to your local public library recently? Before I had my son I never visited the library much. I had no idea how much they offer! A few months before T was born I was driving by the library and I noticed a sign for the library's used book sale. I thought I would stop in and see what it was about. Wow, am I a sucker for a good deal, I came out carrying more books than I knew what to do with! I had an amazing book collection started for T when he was still in utero. I spent less than $30 on well over 100 books. Needless to say I was so excited with my book finds that I went back the second day of the sale for even better deals! My local library offers a special on the last day of their sale (for children's books at least) that allows you to stuff a paper grocery bag for a total of $5! Not only did I start a great library for my son, I saved a ton of money, and stayed green by purchasing previously loved books. After this first used book sale I became hooked on my local library.

After T was born I started checking out books like crazy. I also convinced my husband to cancel our Blockbuster by mail membership because we can check out movies at the library for free! I also began attending all the free classes the library offered. Some classes have included baby and toddler story time, baby music time, infant sign language classes. I can't believe I hadn't frequented the library more often. I live down the street but had hardly taken advantage of all they offered. My new obsession with the public library has also saved my quite a bit of money since the majority of their services are free of charge (with the exception of the occasional late fee).

If you haven't been to your public library recently pay them a visit. Most, if not all, public libraries have a website. Spend some time perusing the site to see how they can benefit you. I highly, highly recommend taking advantage of their used book sales. I can't imagine what the books would have cost me to purchase them new. Plus, if T gets a little creative and colors or tears a page it won't eat me up knowing that a new and expensive book has been destroyed.

My friend, Val, shared this recipe with me a few months ago and it's become one of my faves... I buy all of the ingredient at Costco so I know I'm saving by buying in bulk and I always have the ingredients on-hand for a ridiculously easy meal!

Fajita Salsa Chicken
3-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cups Salsa (I use the Organic Kirkland brand from Costco)
1/4 cup taco seasoning (the large McCormick Taco Seasoning is a steal at Costco, considering the individual packets you get at the store can cost $1+ a piece. The large bottle lasts me FOREVER- like a year! And I make a lot of tacos!)

Pour half of the salsa in the bottom of the crock pot
Lay chicken on top of salsa.
Pour seasoning on chicken.
Pour remaining salsa over the chicken.
Cook on low 6-7 hours or until chicken is cooked through.

The meat will be super tender- I shred it really quickly and serve with whole wheat tortillas and traditional taco/fajita fixings (cheese, lettuce, onion, sour cream, etc....).

Hopefully the H1N1 scares are not keeping you held up at home today foregoing trick or treating. That's not keeping me inside with my lights turned off tonight. My fear? Allergies.. Food allergies. Not that my 16 month old son will be eating candy this year, but I worry about next year and the following years that he'll go trick or treating and not get any candy he can actually eat! (For those of you who don't know, little E is allergic to eggs, soy, milk, sesame, and a few fruits.) I know, such a stupid thing to worry about, but I just LOVE Halloween and want little E to be able to enjoy it as much as I do. So, after a little bit of research, I thought I would share some allergy friendly treats in honor of Halloween with you all. After all, we ALL need a treat once in a while. Moderation, not elimination, is key when it comes to treats!

Here is a great article from Martha Stewart outlining some well-known and lesser-known allergy friendly treats. Candies like Starburst, Skittles, Dum-dums, and Dots are all on this list. But I know what you're thinking- where is the chocolate!?

My favorite chocolate treat on this list are these BOOM Choco BOOM crispy rice bars by Enjoy Life foods. Think a safe version of a Crunch bar but with a way cooler name. You may have read a previous post written by Jackie entitled, "A cloth diaper convert". In that post Jackie spoke about her transition from disposables to cloth diapers. I was pleasantly surprised by the softness of the soaker. They almost had a silkiness to them. They also couldn't have been any easier to use. Each biosoaker has two adhesive tabs, one on each end of the soaker, to keep it in place in the shell. I have to admit that with a very active toddler I was initially skeptical that these little adhesive tabs would keep the soaker in place. I was wrong, they did a great job and I never had them move an inch! The soakers also seemed very thin upon first appearance. So again, I was skeptical. I thought there was no way that these thin soakers would be very absorbent with my heavy wetter. Again, I was wrong! On one occasion they survived a 5 hour nap without leaking! I did have issues with the soaker bunching up in the middle but it bunches in a similar way to the actual cloth soaker from the Gro Baby system. On a positive note, the bunching in no way compromised the absorbency of the soaker. The only issue I had with the biosoakers was that on occasion I noticed some reside from the adhesive tabs left on my Gro Baby shells. This was not a significant issue as the reside did wash off with a few washes. I can't stress enough how convenient these were to use. I have to admit that I do not use cloth diapers when on the go and out of the house for extended periods of time. I just don't want to deal with toting around a stinky and dirty diaper. However, these biosoakers made cloth diapering on the go easy and clean. I now have NO excuse to not give up the 'sposies all together!

A package of 50 biosoakers will cost about $19.99. I initially thought that was on the expensive side. However, it isn't much more than a package of huggies which costs $17.79 for a 52 count package. I definitely think that the biosoakers are worth the extra couple of bucks. Not only are they better for baby and the environment but they are also more convenient and since they are about half the size of a disposable they are also a space saver!

Ridiculously Easy Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe

I'm not much of a cook or a baker. I just don't have the patience. I am lucky enough to have a husband who is a pretty good cook and he keeps us well fed. However, I am a sucker for super simple recipes. About a year ago I found a recipe for peanut butter cookies that is so incredibly easy and takes about 15 minutes from mixing bowl to tummy! These are delicious but I modified the recipe to try to make it a bit healthier. I will share both the original and modified recipes.

Original Recipe -

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Mix the peanut butter, sugar, and egg together.

3. Roll mixture into one tablespoon size balls (or size to your liking)

4. Roll the balls in sugar

5. Place the sugar coated balls on a cookie sheet and flatten with a fork making a criss cross pattern

6. Place in oven for about 10 minutes or until the cookie tops look golden

7. Allow to cool

Modified Healthier Recipe -

1 cup organic peanut butter

1 organic egg

1/2 cup organic sugar

1/4 cup organic milled flax seed

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Mix all ingredients together

3. Roll mixture into one tablespoon size balls (or size to your liking) (omit rolling in sugar)

4. Place the peanut butter balls on a cookie sheet and flatten with a fork making a criss cross pattern

5. Place in oven for about 10 minutes or until the cookie tops look golden

6. Allow to cool

In the original recipe the sugar is used to bind the peanut butter and egg. I have tried to omit all the sugar and substitute other binding agents such as flour and greater amounts of flax seed. However, I felt that the finished product tasted too grainy. Even though all the ingredients I used are organic, and often cost more, I buy them in bulk at Costco so they ended up being less expensive per ounce than purchasing non organic at a regular grocery store.

Diggin' the Rockin' Green

After reading a multitude of tweets and blogs praising Rockin' Green Detergent, I just HAD to give it a shot. I was intrigued and wondering just how a laundry detergent could be that awesome especially since I have never noticed any true differences between detergents while laundering my cloth diapers (or clothes, for that matter). So, I purchased a bag of the Soft Rock (sensitive version) of Rockin' Green along with a bottle of Shake It Up Pail Freshener, both in the Cucumber Mint scent. Yes, you read that correctly, this laundry detergent designed specifically for cloth diapers is scented and offers a dozen or so fragrances to choose from!

Adding a little bit on the fragrance: A little bit about the Cucumber Mint scent-- It is very minty, like a spearmint, with a soft cucumber scent. I also have a sample here of the Vanilla Buttercream and it smells like a cupcake- yum! While some of the fragrances Rockin' Green offers seem a little different for a laundry detergent, they are delicious and are not overpowering- feel free to experiment and have fun!

A little background here... For my cloth diapers, I have been using Country Save or Tiny Bubbles successfully, or so I thought. However, I had noticed over the past month or so that I was getting a very pungent ammonia odor coming from the diaper pail. I thought it was just me lazy and waiting too long to do laundry or maybe I needed to strip the diapers.

I grabbed my bag of dirty, stinky diapers and tossed them in the machine for a quick cold rinse, then added about 2 tbsp of the Rockin' Green detergent and ran a hot wash w/ cold rinse, then dried as normal. It was so fun to add a little fragrance to the dull laundry routine, but rest assured the diapers do not come out overpoweringly fragranced. The diapers came out fresh and clean but I knew the real test would be after they were used and in the diaper pail again. So, after using the diapers and letting them sit in the pail a couple days, I was extremely surprised and pleased that the ammonia odor was gone! Could it be true? Did Rockin' Green really eliminate my stinkies with just a normal wash and without stripping? I think it did! I've been using Rockin' Green for about 3 weeks now and I have to say I'm in love!

Want to know what else is awesome about this detergent? It takes the stress out of laundering your cloth diapers. I don't know about you, but I am fairly new to cloth diapering and the laundering instructions, suggestions, detergent charts, etc are daunting. Better use enough of this detergent, but not TOO much or you'll get build up. Better not use this detergent because of the enzymes or it will make your diapers repel or your diapers will get stinky. I breathed easy knowing with Rockin' Green, if I was a little generous with the detergent, I wouldn't have to fear buildup and stinky diapers... I would get the same great result! This has especially come in handy this week as I broke my ankle and my awesome hubby is doing the cloth diaper laundry. I instructed him to use the Rockin' Green and nothing else because I knew how easy it was to use and I didn't have to worry about him using too much detergent or not enough!

No frills, no fuss, a SIMPLE cloth wash routine!

This post is part of the Cloth Diaper Blog Carnival! The topic of this carnival is, "what is your wash routine".

When people find out that T wears cloth diapers they often look at me like I have three heads. They then follow up with, "isn't that a lot of work?". I'm not gonna lie, when I first began contemplating the idea of cloth diapering I was pretty overwhelmed with the vast amount of information all over the internet. At first it did seem to me like it was going to be a lot of work. There were so many diapers to choose from, how would I know which was the right choice for our family? In reality, deciding what diapers to use was actually a piece of cake compared to figuring out how to wash the diapers (or so I thought)! I was so intimidated with the various wash routines I found recommended online. Many of the routines seemed so complicated and time consuming. I knew that I would never stick to cloth diapering without a super simple routine. Simplicity became my mantra. I found that cloth diapering doesn't have to be overwhelming and time consuming. It can be as easy as using a disposable! Here is my simple, no frills, no fuss routine...

1. COLD rinse cycle with NO detergent

2. HOT wash cycle with detergent (I use Tiny Bubbles detergent), one scoop in a HE front loading washer and two scoops in a top loader.

3. Additional cold rinse cycle No detergent

4. SUN, SUN, SUN, on sunny days I dry all my diapers in the sun and then fluff them in the dryer on a 20 minute setting. The sun acts as a natural bleaching agent, kills bacteria, and leaves the diapers smelling fresh. In the winter I do one dryer cycle and then finish drying the diapers overnight on the radiators.

Once I had conquered the laundry routine I thought everything would be smooth sailing... Until my diapers started to have an awful stank. Ugh, now my diapers needed to be stripped and the stripping techniques I read about were even more daunting than the laundry methods I first encountered. In the past year I have had to strip my diapers once. Which, I think is pretty good since I have read that many people have to strip their cloth diapers every month or so. In my search for the simplest method to strip I found that the main reason for needing to strip diapers is due to detergent build up. It doesn't make much sense to strip diapers with detergent when the issue is due to detergent. Therefore I found that rinsing, and rinsing, and rinsing with NO detergent in HOT water pretty much did the job. I also added 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle of the final wash (followed by one additional rinse). The vinegar helps to:

neutralize the urine in cloth diapers
equalize the pH balance
eliminate soap residue
deters the setting in of stains
can help keep colors from bleeding
acts as a natural fabric softener

I believe that the reason I needed to strip my diapers was due to a build up of detergent. When I first began cloth diapering I used detergent in both my first and second wash cycles (I was also using a different detergent). I was just using too much soap. It's funny how using too much detergent can cause diaper stank. One would think that more detergent would lead to fresher smelling diapers, boy is that wrong! Since I have changed my routine, I have not had an issue with build up or with stinky diapers.

And there ya have it, that's it. That's my simple wash routine. There are no frills, no fuss, and it gets the job done! I don't think it can get much simpler than that, and if it can PLEASE comment and let us know how!

I love gymboree clothing. I think the quality is great and pieces hold their value. I also know that I will get a fair resale price on items in good condition when I am done using them. However, gymboree clothes are pricey and at full price are way out of my budget. I have very strict rules when shopping for T. I can't fathom spending a lot on items that he may wear a few times or grow out of in a matter of months. So, my gymboree shopping rules are as follows:
1. I only shop during gymbuck earning time and gymbuck redemption time.
2. I only purchase items on sale and the items have to be at least 50% off the original price.
3. I attempt to never spend more than $10 on any one article of clothing. I usually spend much less than this but there are some things like jackets, holiday clothes, etc. that I may have to spend more than $10 on.
4. I only shop with a coupon. Coupons can often be found in various magazines. (Recently I found a 20% off coupon in the September issue of Oprah's magazine).
5. I only order online when I can get free shipping.
5. I keep all my receipts and don't remove tags until T is ready to wear the item. If I find the item marked down more than what I purchased it for I will re-buy the lower price item and return the one I bought at the higher price.

I recently added up my gymboree receipts for the last year and figured out that on average I only spent $5 per item of gymboree clothing that T has. That's a great deal because I should be able to resell it for that price and in the end I could break even!
